Απόσπασμα από κήρυγμα του αγίου Ιωάννη Μαξιμόβιτς, κατά την 40η επέτειο του μαρτυρίου των βασιλομαρτύρων.
Τι συνέβη σαν σήμερα πριν από σαράντα χρόνια; Αποστασία από τον κεχρισμένο του Θεού, αποστασία από την υποταγμένη στον Θεό εξουσία, αποστασία από τον όρκο πιστότητας στον θεοπρόβλητο και κεχρισμένο ηγεμόνα, και η παράδοσή του στον θάνατο.
Αυτός ο οποίος αφιέρωσε όλες τις δυνάμεις του στο όνομα του Κυρίου, για να υπηρετήσει την Ρωσσία, στερήθηκε της εξουσίας και στην συνέχεια της ίδιας της ελευθερίας του. Κατ’ εκείνες τις μέρες, το Πσκόφ [όπου υπέγραψε την παραίτησή του] έγινε η Γεθσημανή του τσάρου και το Αικατερίνμπουργκ ο Γολγοθάς του. Ο τσάρος Νικόλαος πέθανε ως μάρτυς με ακλόνητη πίστη και υπομονή, έχοντας πιεί το ποτήριο των θλίψεων μέχρι τέλους.
