Υπάρχουν πολλές ενδείξεις ότι η βασιλική οικογένεια είχε πλήρη επίγνωση, ότι την ανέμενε μαρτυρικό τέλος και ετοιμαζόταν συνειδητά για το μαρτύριο. Η μόνη τους ανησυχία ήταν να μην τους χωρίσουν οι μπολσεβίκοι από την αγαπημένη τους Ρωσσία, εξορίζοντάς τους στο εξωτερικό. Την πνευματική κατάσταση των μελών της οικογενείας και τα αισθήματά τους εξέφραζε καθαρά η βασιλομάρτυς τσαρίνα Αλεξάνδρα στις εμπιστευτικές επιστολές της προς την φίλη της Άννα Βύρουμποβα, ζητώντας από αυτήν μάλιστα να κάψει τις επιστολές αυτές, ώστε να μην προκαλέσουν προβλήματα σε περίπτωση που τις ανακάλυπταν οι διώκτες τους.
Η ευσεβής τσαρίνα, εξόριστη στην πόλη Τομπόλσκ της Δυτικής Σιβηρίας, από τις αρχές του Αυγούστου 1917 μέχρι και την άνοιξη του 1918, φυλακισμένη σε ένα σπίτι της πόλης αυτής και υπομένοντας πολλές στερήσεις, ανοίγει την δοκιμαζομένη καρδιά της ενώπιον της φίλης της, η οποία περνούσε επίσης φοβερές δοκιμασίες στην μακρινή Αγία Πετρούπολη. Την ίδια ώρα, το μέτωπο κατά των Γερμανών διαλύεται και τα στρατεύματα του εχθρού εισέρχονται βαθειά στο ρωσσικό έδαφος. Ολόκληρη η Ρωσσία μαστίζεται ήδη από τον εμφύλιο πόλεμο, από μίση, προδοσίες, βία, φρικτά εγκλήματα και πρωτάκουστες ιεροσυλίες. Τα ακόλουθα αποσπάσματα από τις επιστολές της τσαρίνας προς την Βύρουμποβα είναι αρκετά ενδεικτικά του ψηλού πνευματικού επιπέδου τόσο αυτής όσο και όλης της οικογένειάς της.
«9 Δεκεμβρίου 1917,
Σήμερα εορτάζεται η Εικόνα [της Θεοτόκου] Απροσδόκητος Χαρά, την οποία τώρα τιμώ πάντοτε και εσύ, ψυχούλα μου, κάνε το ίδιο. Είναι η επέτειος του τελευταίου ταξιδιού μας. Θυμάσαι πόσο ευχάριστο ήταν. Η καλή Γερόντισσα* έχει κοιμηθεί, αλλά η μορφή της είναι πάντοτε μαζί μου... Ο Κύριος είναι τόσο πλησίον μας· αισθάνομαι την υποστήριξή Του· εκπλήσσομαι τακτικά, πως αντέχω πράγματα και χωρισμούς, τα οποία πριν θα με σκότωναν. Υπάρχει ειρήνη στην ψυχή, αν και υποφέρω φοβερά, φοβερά για την Πατρίδα και για σένα. Όμως, κατανοώ ότι όλα είναι προς το καλύτερο...».
